Have you ever been hindered from trying out a new experience or talking to a possible client or taking that leap that could have potentially brought you to a whole new level of success? If yes, who or what stopped you?

Chances are, the person who stopped you from doing all that, is also yourself. Don’t blame yourself though. It’s probably because there’s fear of possible rejections or failures. And we’re here to remind you that it’s totally normal to feel anxious when things become uncertain. It’s also common for negative and self-destructive thoughts to slowly creep into your mind and would even linger.

Self-doubt is absolute dream-killer. Here’s how you end it according to author and best-selling speaker, Mel Robbins: use the 5-second rule (https://melrobbins.com/blog/five-elements-5-second-rule/).

In her youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab7bJ2j4DDk), Robbins explained: “First, here’s what I want you to know. You are not a worrier. You have a habit of worrying. That’s a very big difference.

You’ve allowed your mind to drift and linger on negative thoughts so many times that it’s now a pattern of behavior that you repeat. And you don’t even realize it. And that’s actually good news cause you and I can use the science of habits to break the habit of worrying and the habit of doubting yourself.

In the language of habit research, the 5 second rule is what psychologists call a starting ritual. It’s a tool that you can use that will interrupt the negative thought patterns that are encoded in your brain as habits and trigger positive new thought and behaviour patterns.”

Here’s how we use the 5-second rule

  1. Every time you feel your thoughts drift to something negative or you find yourself worrying about things you can’t control, count backwards — 5,4,3,2,1. It will switch the gears in your brain and interrupt the negative thought pattern. The counting will focus you on the goal or commitment and distract you from the worries, thoughts, and excuses in your mind.
  2. As soon as you reach “1” – push yourself to move, make that call, approach that client, jump and workout!

This is how you push yourself to do the hard stuff – the work that you don’t feel like doing, or you’re scared of doing, or you’re avoiding.

That’s it. 5 seconds is all it takes for you to live the best life ever! And did we mention that this what we’ve mentioned above is backed by science (https://melrobbins.com/blog/5-second-rule-hack-science-explained/)? Go try it!
